Information for Parents
Pursuing a college education is a commitment that requires the support from the entire family, not just the student. As the parent of a ÃÛÌÒ´«Ã½ student, your guidance and encouragement are essential every step of the way. You also play a role in your child's financial aid:
- If your child wishes to apply for financial aid and is considered a dependent student, they will need your help consenting to the use of your income information and signing the FAFSA or TASFA. Without it, your child will not be eligible for any grants and most types of need-based financial aid.
- If your child's application is selected for verification or has any conflicting information, you may need to submit certain signed documents to confirm the correct information.
We want to engage with you and help you understand the process and your child's eligibility and status. However, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), prohibits us providing information from a student to anyone else, unless your child gives us permission to do so. If your child agrees, they can submit an Authorization to Release Education Records to the Office of Registration and Records.
Without a release, we can only answer general questions about financial aid and scholarships. Either way, we will be happy to talk to you - you can schedule an in-person or virtual appointment by visiting or you can email studentfinancialaid@utep.edu.
